Innoson Motors stops production, sack of workers imminent due to Dollars scarcity

At a factory in southeast Nigeria, dozens of new white buses stand at the end of the production line, apparently ready to take on some of Africa’s toughest roads.

Unfortunately for Nigeria’s main domestic vehicle assembly firm, they are going nowhere for now.

In an economy starved of dollars because of the slump in oil prices, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) cannot buy imported components, leaving the buses without engines – a metaphor for the problems afflicting Africa’s most populous nation - Nigeria.

Crossover-Based Hyundai Santa Cruz Truck Deemed Too Soft for Australia: Report

If you were hoping to get behind the wheel of Hyundai’s upcoming Santa Cruz mini-truck, we hope you’re not an Aussie. According to a report from Motoring, Hyundai deemed the soft, crossover-based Santa Cruz not suitable for the Australian market.

Hyundai Australia COO Scott Grant confirmed to Motoring that the tiny truck will not see duty in Oz, claiming the Santa Cruz is not up to the task of dealing with those who use trucks in the rugged areas of Australia. “The Santa Cruz is not in any way suitable for Australia, therefore it is not even being considered for this market,” Grant told Motoring. “From our point of view we want a proper HiLux, Ranger, Navara type of product, and the Santa Cruz won’t work for us. It’s too small and lightweight. We just don’t think it’d sell – Australian consumers won’t go for it.”

AUTO MAINTENANCE: The Basics Of Lubricating Car Engines.........Part 1

Oil lubrication is vital to vehicle engine system such that it provides a barrier between rotating engine parts to prevent damage by friction, damage which can result in huge auto repair bills. The engine lubrication system includes the oil pump, oil filter, lubricating oil and the oil passages. The engine oil provides a method of cooling engine parts that are not cooled by the engine cooling system. Engine oil helps to protect engine components from corrosion by neutralizing harmful chemicals that are the by-product of combustion.

To protect moving parts and reduce friction, automotive engine oil provides a barrier between the rotating or moving engine components. Ideally, a film of oil should exist between moving components. This is called full film lubrication. In order to achieve full film lubrication, a constant supply of clean oil is required. The engine oil system constantly filters and circulates engine oil to ensure that all components are protected.

The engine oil is stored in the crankcase. Most engines hold between 4 to 6 quarts of oil. The engine oil pump pressurizes and circulates the engine oil.

The oil will flow from the OIL PUMP to the OIL FILTER, where it is cleaned. The cleaned engine oil then moves through passages, into the CRANKSHAFT where it circulates through the engine bearings. The crankshaft has passages bored into it that allows oil to travel to all the bearing surfaces. The CYLINDER WALLS and PISTONS are lubricated by the oil that is thrown from the CRANKSHAFT as it rotates. This is sometimes referred to as SPLASH LUBRICATION.

Engine oil will leave the CRANKSHAFT, usually at a passage in one of the main bearings and is fed to the CAMSHAFT and LIFTERS. On some overhead valve engines, oil will travel through the PUSHRODS up to the VALVE TRAIN to lubricate the rocker arms. Other designs use a passage to feed oil through a ROCKER ARM shaft to achieve the same purpose. The oil then returns to the CRANKCASE by return holes in the cylinder heads. It is then picked up by the OIL PUMP to be circulated again.

This process is more or less like a circular form ::> From the OIL PUMP to the OIL FILTER to the CRANKSHAFT to the CAMSHAFT/LIFTERS to the VALVE TRAIN to the CRANKCASE then back to the OIL PUMP.

AUTO MAINTENANCE: Car Engine Consuming Too Much Oil -- Resolved

COMMON CAUSES
The most common reason for the consumption of engine oil is worn valve guides, usually the exhaust guides or worn piston rings. If you change your engines oil every 3,000 miles, running a 1/2 quart low on oil at the time of oil change can be normal.

The engines oil in car engines provides lubrication to critical moving parts within the engine. Some of these parts are the rings and valve guides, require moderate lubrication. It also keeps the oil from entering the combustion chamber.

If these parts wear, too much clearance between the mating surfaces will exist and will allow the oil to enter the combustion chamber where it will be burnt and exhausted out of the tail pipe.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE

-    Run the engine for several minutes at idle.

-    Turn the engine off and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

-    Restart the engine and immediately increase the engine speed while you observe the exhaust.

If a heavy billow of bluish smoke is exhausted then disappears and the exhaust remains relatively clean, the most likely cause is excessive valve guide wear.

In this case, the valve guides or valve guide seals require service.

If the above test only produces mild smoke and the smoke remains at the same level during all operating conditions, the piston rings will have to be tested.

This is done by performing a compression test on the engine. The first test is referred to as a “dry test” and the second test is referred to as a “wet test”.

The dry test consists of measuring the engines compression using a compression tester installed in the spark plug hole and the ignition system disabled. The engine is then cranked and the pressure is measured and recorded. A few teaspoons full of oil is then poured into the spark plug hole and the compression is then measured again. If the reading increases more than 15 PSI, the rings are worn and major engine service is probably required.

PRECAUTION, TIPS AND NOTES

Use caution when working around hot or rotating engine parts. Compression testers are available at most auto parts stores. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for proper useage.

When performing a compression test it is critical that the ignition system be disabled to prevent the engine from starting. This is usually done by connecting a wire to each of the spark plug wires to a good engine ground away from your work area. Refer to a manufacturers specific service manual for proper testing procedures.

Beijing Motor Show: Chinese Designed Nissan Lannia Concept Debut

Early last month Nissan Automobile Company announces the release of a new product sedan car called Lannia in China. A month later the sedan car was unveiled in the Beijing Motor Show.

Below is a few description of the Nissan Lannia Concept….

Nissan showed off a stylish new concept car to the assembled crowds of media at the Beijing Motor Show. The Lannia Concept is... well, it's not that easy to describe. It's kind of a sedan, only it looks a bit like a fastback from the rear. But for a twist, it has an ever-so-small rear deck. Regardless of how we'd classify it, it's a seriously sharp piece of styling, thanks to its unique shape and flowing character lines.
If the Lannia's styling appears familiar, it's because we've sort of seen it before. There's more than a little bit of inspiration from the Friend-Me Concept. The Lannia's overall shape is similar to the Friend-Me, while both the front and rear clips look decidedly more production ready. Considering this evolution, we shouldn't rule out a production Lannia in the next few years. And if Nissan's product boss, Andy Palmer is any indication, the new model might not be limited to China.

"It was designed by Chinese, built by Chinese for the Chinese people, and ultimately, for the world," Palmer said in a statement. If Nissan can keep this sharp styling, this could prove a compelling buy in a number of markets.

Nissan doesn't provide a great deal of additional information on this new concept. Rather than tell us about its engine, transmission or interior, the Japanese manufacturer simply said the Lannia is a "sedan theory-breaker," whatever that means. It's targeted, meanwhile, at Chinese "post-80s" trendsetters, which we take to mean either very hip nonagenarians or trendy people born after the 1980s (it's probably the latter).

Take a look above for our gallery of live images from Beijing, and then scroll down for the full round of assets from Nissan on the all-new Lannia Concept.

2015 Model Honda Civic Type R Concept Unveiled #Watch Videos And Pictures

I was surfing through the internet and I saw this piece of information and thought it will be necessary to share with Naija Modern Cars fans.

Its about the 2015 Model of Honda Civic Type R Concept Unveiled in Geneva, I am posting it here for car lovers to know what to expect in 2015.

Details.......

Honda’s latest Civic Type R is nearing the end of its gestation, and at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show this week we got our first definitive look at the completed car in the form of a thinly veiled concept version. The aggressively-styled Civic Type R concept is said to point to the styling direction for the production version that will go on sale overseas in early 2015, and takes inspiration from Honda’s Civic race car that competes in the World Touring Car Championship.

Interestingly, the design shows some new elements not seen on the regular Civic or the prototype versions of the Civic Type R we’ve been spying for the past year. The design is heavily linked to performance, with many of the elements offering real performance benefits, as confirmed by testing at the Nürburgring race track in Germany.

French Giant Auto Company To Begin The Assembly Of Mitsubishi & Fuso Trucks Locally

French automobile manufacturer, CFAO Automotive Group, on Thursday in Abuja said it was making necessary logistic arrangements to begin vehicle assembly operations in the country.

A statement by the National Automotive Council (NAC) quoted the Managing Director of CFAO, Mr Olivier Levigne, as saying this during a visit to the Director-General of the council, Mr Aminu Jalal.

According to the statement signed by Mr Bello Rasheed, the Principal Executive Officer, Information of the council, Levigne said that the company would engage in local assembly of Mitsubishi and Fuso light trucks and pickups.
Levigne said that the company’s workshop and warehouses on its 15,000 square metre land at Amuwo Odofin Industrial Area, Lagos, was now being converted into a vehicle assembly line.

The CFAO boss solicited the support of the council as well as an enabling environment“in this new automotive industrial venture”.
In his remark, the NAC boss commended CFAO for taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the Federal Government under the Nigerian Automotive Industrial Development Plan (NAIDP) for smooth local manufacturing of vehicles.

Jalal assured his guest that government had put in place appropriate fiscal measures, incentives and conducive business environment for investors under the automotive development plan.

“All these facilities are meant to guarantee the survival, growth and sustainable development of the automotive industry in Nigeria,”the statement quoted him as saying. (NAN)

Importation of Tokunboh Cars Not Affected by the New Automobile Policy

The Federal Government has restated its intention to regulate the importation of fairly used vehicles, also known as tokunboh, into the country even as it said that it would not place an outright ban on the practice.

Minister of industry, trade and investment Dr Olusegun Aganga stated that the “New Automobile Policy” by the federal government would not affect the importation of fairly used cars popularly known as tokunboh into the country.

The minister declared this during a facility tour of Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) Limited in Kaduna yesterday. He said that “we are not going to ban tokunbo vehicles because of the socio-economic circumstances we have in the country”.

The minister added that the federal government had studied what was done in Pakistan, India, and in South Africa, adding: “It is normal that in most countries they ban the importation of tokunbo cars because that will help the demand for locally made cars.”

“We must work towards providing alternative cars before we even consider placing a ban on tokunbo cars. So, in Nigeria, we have not banned the importation of fairly used vehicles yet. If we slow down the demand, it will slow down the pace of growth.”

Aganga continued: “If you look at the cars today, for every new car that is imported, almost six tokunbo cars are imported into the country. That tells you that the economy of the country is a priority, and when you see that, as a country you cannot afford to place a ban.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has said we are not placing ban on tokunboh vehicles until we have alternative for them. So, tokunboh cars will still come into the country and we will do everything possible to make sure that we can produce affordable and new cars for Nigerians.”

He, however, told PAN that he was ready to see the June deadline when the company would produce its first indigenous car.

Earlier, PAN’s managing director, Alhaji Ibrahim Boyi, said the management was committed to repositioning the organisation.

According to him, “since the new management came on board, the company has embarked on some turnaround strategies”.  He listed the strategies as rebuilding relationship, improving trade and expanding coverage with Peugeot France and, ultimately, commencing “sale, support and assembly of high-quality Peugeot products.”
