Innoson Motors stops production, sack of workers imminent due to Dollars scarcity

At a factory in southeast Nigeria, dozens of new white buses stand at the end of the production line, apparently ready to take on some of Africa’s toughest roads.

Unfortunately for Nigeria’s main domestic vehicle assembly firm, they are going nowhere for now.

In an economy starved of dollars because of the slump in oil prices, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) cannot buy imported components, leaving the buses without engines – a metaphor for the problems afflicting Africa’s most populous nation - Nigeria.

Crossover-Based Hyundai Santa Cruz Truck Deemed Too Soft for Australia: Report

If you were hoping to get behind the wheel of Hyundai’s upcoming Santa Cruz mini-truck, we hope you’re not an Aussie. According to a report from Motoring, Hyundai deemed the soft, crossover-based Santa Cruz not suitable for the Australian market.

Hyundai Australia COO Scott Grant confirmed to Motoring that the tiny truck will not see duty in Oz, claiming the Santa Cruz is not up to the task of dealing with those who use trucks in the rugged areas of Australia. “The Santa Cruz is not in any way suitable for Australia, therefore it is not even being considered for this market,” Grant told Motoring. “From our point of view we want a proper HiLux, Ranger, Navara type of product, and the Santa Cruz won’t work for us. It’s too small and lightweight. We just don’t think it’d sell – Australian consumers won’t go for it.”

The Difference Between 4Wheel Drive SUV's and All Wheel Drive Vehicles

I found this helpful information about the difference between a 4Wheel Drive(4WD) Truck and All Wheel Drive(AWD) car/SUV.

Despite the increasing number of online resources and shifting dealer strategies, car shopping is still a bother. Add in all the new car segments, vehicle features, and technology acronyms, and the process becomes truly daunting.

There’s a long list of confusing topics when finding the right car, but all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) seem to consistently confound salespeople and car shoppers alike. Often, these terms are used interchangeably, but are they really the same? In the motoring world, they actually refer to very different systems, which can produce radically different results. But let’s get to the point: how does 4WD or AWD impact your daily driving life, and which badge belongs on your car?

AUTO MAINTENANCE: The Basics Of Lubricating Car Engines.........Part 1

Oil lubrication is vital to vehicle engine system such that it provides a barrier between rotating engine parts to prevent damage by friction, damage which can result in huge auto repair bills. The engine lubrication system includes the oil pump, oil filter, lubricating oil and the oil passages. The engine oil provides a method of cooling engine parts that are not cooled by the engine cooling system. Engine oil helps to protect engine components from corrosion by neutralizing harmful chemicals that are the by-product of combustion.

To protect moving parts and reduce friction, automotive engine oil provides a barrier between the rotating or moving engine components. Ideally, a film of oil should exist between moving components. This is called full film lubrication. In order to achieve full film lubrication, a constant supply of clean oil is required. The engine oil system constantly filters and circulates engine oil to ensure that all components are protected.

The engine oil is stored in the crankcase. Most engines hold between 4 to 6 quarts of oil. The engine oil pump pressurizes and circulates the engine oil.

The oil will flow from the OIL PUMP to the OIL FILTER, where it is cleaned. The cleaned engine oil then moves through passages, into the CRANKSHAFT where it circulates through the engine bearings. The crankshaft has passages bored into it that allows oil to travel to all the bearing surfaces. The CYLINDER WALLS and PISTONS are lubricated by the oil that is thrown from the CRANKSHAFT as it rotates. This is sometimes referred to as SPLASH LUBRICATION.

Engine oil will leave the CRANKSHAFT, usually at a passage in one of the main bearings and is fed to the CAMSHAFT and LIFTERS. On some overhead valve engines, oil will travel through the PUSHRODS up to the VALVE TRAIN to lubricate the rocker arms. Other designs use a passage to feed oil through a ROCKER ARM shaft to achieve the same purpose. The oil then returns to the CRANKCASE by return holes in the cylinder heads. It is then picked up by the OIL PUMP to be circulated again.

This process is more or less like a circular form ::> From the OIL PUMP to the OIL FILTER to the CRANKSHAFT to the CAMSHAFT/LIFTERS to the VALVE TRAIN to the CRANKCASE then back to the OIL PUMP.

AUTO MAINTENANCE: Car Engine Consuming Too Much Oil -- Resolved

COMMON CAUSES
The most common reason for the consumption of engine oil is worn valve guides, usually the exhaust guides or worn piston rings. If you change your engines oil every 3,000 miles, running a 1/2 quart low on oil at the time of oil change can be normal.

The engines oil in car engines provides lubrication to critical moving parts within the engine. Some of these parts are the rings and valve guides, require moderate lubrication. It also keeps the oil from entering the combustion chamber.

If these parts wear, too much clearance between the mating surfaces will exist and will allow the oil to enter the combustion chamber where it will be burnt and exhausted out of the tail pipe.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE

-    Run the engine for several minutes at idle.

-    Turn the engine off and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

-    Restart the engine and immediately increase the engine speed while you observe the exhaust.

If a heavy billow of bluish smoke is exhausted then disappears and the exhaust remains relatively clean, the most likely cause is excessive valve guide wear.

In this case, the valve guides or valve guide seals require service.

If the above test only produces mild smoke and the smoke remains at the same level during all operating conditions, the piston rings will have to be tested.

This is done by performing a compression test on the engine. The first test is referred to as a “dry test” and the second test is referred to as a “wet test”.

The dry test consists of measuring the engines compression using a compression tester installed in the spark plug hole and the ignition system disabled. The engine is then cranked and the pressure is measured and recorded. A few teaspoons full of oil is then poured into the spark plug hole and the compression is then measured again. If the reading increases more than 15 PSI, the rings are worn and major engine service is probably required.

PRECAUTION, TIPS AND NOTES

Use caution when working around hot or rotating engine parts. Compression testers are available at most auto parts stores. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for proper useage.

When performing a compression test it is critical that the ignition system be disabled to prevent the engine from starting. This is usually done by connecting a wire to each of the spark plug wires to a good engine ground away from your work area. Refer to a manufacturers specific service manual for proper testing procedures.

Beijing Motor Show: Chinese Designed Nissan Lannia Concept Debut

Early last month Nissan Automobile Company announces the release of a new product sedan car called Lannia in China. A month later the sedan car was unveiled in the Beijing Motor Show.

Below is a few description of the Nissan Lannia Concept….

Nissan showed off a stylish new concept car to the assembled crowds of media at the Beijing Motor Show. The Lannia Concept is... well, it's not that easy to describe. It's kind of a sedan, only it looks a bit like a fastback from the rear. But for a twist, it has an ever-so-small rear deck. Regardless of how we'd classify it, it's a seriously sharp piece of styling, thanks to its unique shape and flowing character lines.
If the Lannia's styling appears familiar, it's because we've sort of seen it before. There's more than a little bit of inspiration from the Friend-Me Concept. The Lannia's overall shape is similar to the Friend-Me, while both the front and rear clips look decidedly more production ready. Considering this evolution, we shouldn't rule out a production Lannia in the next few years. And if Nissan's product boss, Andy Palmer is any indication, the new model might not be limited to China.

"It was designed by Chinese, built by Chinese for the Chinese people, and ultimately, for the world," Palmer said in a statement. If Nissan can keep this sharp styling, this could prove a compelling buy in a number of markets.

Nissan doesn't provide a great deal of additional information on this new concept. Rather than tell us about its engine, transmission or interior, the Japanese manufacturer simply said the Lannia is a "sedan theory-breaker," whatever that means. It's targeted, meanwhile, at Chinese "post-80s" trendsetters, which we take to mean either very hip nonagenarians or trendy people born after the 1980s (it's probably the latter).

Take a look above for our gallery of live images from Beijing, and then scroll down for the full round of assets from Nissan on the all-new Lannia Concept.

2015 Model Honda Civic Type R Concept Unveiled #Watch Videos And Pictures

I was surfing through the internet and I saw this piece of information and thought it will be necessary to share with Naija Modern Cars fans.

Its about the 2015 Model of Honda Civic Type R Concept Unveiled in Geneva, I am posting it here for car lovers to know what to expect in 2015.

Details.......

Honda’s latest Civic Type R is nearing the end of its gestation, and at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show this week we got our first definitive look at the completed car in the form of a thinly veiled concept version. The aggressively-styled Civic Type R concept is said to point to the styling direction for the production version that will go on sale overseas in early 2015, and takes inspiration from Honda’s Civic race car that competes in the World Touring Car Championship.

Interestingly, the design shows some new elements not seen on the regular Civic or the prototype versions of the Civic Type R we’ve been spying for the past year. The design is heavily linked to performance, with many of the elements offering real performance benefits, as confirmed by testing at the Nürburgring race track in Germany.

Understanding The Types Of Vehicles Exhaust Smokes, The Possible Problem And Solutions

car exhaust smoke
Did you notice recently that the colored smoke coming from your car’s exhaust is not good to your vehicles. The very best for your car is colorless fume coming from your car's exhaust. Though car exhaust brings out different color smokes depending on where the fault is coming from, and you must pay attention to it even if the car is not given any fault notice.

To know what the colors means and where it is likely the fault is coming from. You need to study carefully the four basic 'bad' colors coming out from your car exhaust, and what may be causing them.

What does BLACK smoke from my exhaust mean?
When the engine is burning too much fuel the car exhaust releases black colored smoke.

If your car exhaust is releasing black colored smoke, what you should do first is to check your air-filter and other intake components like sensors, fuel injectors and the fuel-pressure regulator.

Another reason why your car exhaust may be smoking black colored smoke could be a clogged fuel return line. Black smoke is usually the easiest issue to diagnose and fix, but burning unnecessary fuel will definitely affect your fuel economy, so don’t think of avoiding this one to save money, it won’t work.

What does BLUE smoke from my exhaust mean?
Unlike the when your car is blowing a black smoke, If your car is blowing blue smoke, it’s a clear sign that the engine is burning oil. What happens is that the valve guide seals or piston rings are worn out, and oil is leaking past from where it should be lubricating the moving parts, to the combustion chamber where it’s being burned up with the fuel.

If you’re seeing this kind of smoke, check your oil regularly and watch for consumption issues. While an issue that normally should require immediate attention and expensive repairs, including some internal replacement parts, if your vehicle is old and the leak is minimal, it can be carefully managed by topping up the oil on a regular basis.

Along with environmental damage, burning oil can cause rough starts, as the process can ruin the car’s spark plugs.

There is another reason for blue smoke, and that’s if the car is turbocharged; the smoke being a sign that the blower is in need of rebuilding or replacement.

What does GRAY smoke from my exhaust mean?
Gray smoke is hard to diagnose directly. Like blue smoke, it can mean that the car is burning oil or suffering from a bad turbocharger. Take the same precautions as with blue smoke, and check for excessive oil consumption.

Gray smoke can also be an issue with your automatic transmission fluid getting burned up in the engine. A faulty transmission vacuum modulator would be the culprit in this situation, leading to transmission fluid getting sucked into the engine and getting burned up.

Furthermore, gray smoke could mean a stuck PCV valve. The PCV system (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) cuts down on harmful emissions by recycling them back into the combustion chamber. However, when the PCV valve gets stuck, pressure can build and lead to oil leaks. Fortunately, PCV valves aren’t expensive, and can be a quick job for a mechanic or a do-it-yourselfer.

What does WHITE smoke from my exhaust mean?
White smoke can be nothing to be concerned about if it’s thin, like vapor. This is probably the result of normal condensation buildup inside the exhaust system. This kind of smoke disappears quickly.

However, thicker smoke is a big problem, and can be caused by the engine burning coolant. This can be the result of a serious issue like a blown head gasket, a damaged cylinder head, or a cracked engine block – all of which are costly repairs.

Don’t ignore it, however, as the problem could become far worse. Even a small leak in the coolant can lead to overheating and serious risk of damage to the engine. A coolant leak can also mix with oil and cause serious headaches for you and your car.

Any smoke coming from your car’s exhaust pipe is a sign that your car is in distress. Pay attention to what it needs to ensure more miles for your vehicle.

Importation of Tokunboh Cars Not Affected by the New Automobile Policy

The Federal Government has restated its intention to regulate the importation of fairly used vehicles, also known as tokunboh, into the country even as it said that it would not place an outright ban on the practice.

Minister of industry, trade and investment Dr Olusegun Aganga stated that the “New Automobile Policy” by the federal government would not affect the importation of fairly used cars popularly known as tokunboh into the country.

The minister declared this during a facility tour of Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) Limited in Kaduna yesterday. He said that “we are not going to ban tokunbo vehicles because of the socio-economic circumstances we have in the country”.

The minister added that the federal government had studied what was done in Pakistan, India, and in South Africa, adding: “It is normal that in most countries they ban the importation of tokunbo cars because that will help the demand for locally made cars.”

“We must work towards providing alternative cars before we even consider placing a ban on tokunbo cars. So, in Nigeria, we have not banned the importation of fairly used vehicles yet. If we slow down the demand, it will slow down the pace of growth.”

Aganga continued: “If you look at the cars today, for every new car that is imported, almost six tokunbo cars are imported into the country. That tells you that the economy of the country is a priority, and when you see that, as a country you cannot afford to place a ban.

“The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has said we are not placing ban on tokunboh vehicles until we have alternative for them. So, tokunboh cars will still come into the country and we will do everything possible to make sure that we can produce affordable and new cars for Nigerians.”

He, however, told PAN that he was ready to see the June deadline when the company would produce its first indigenous car.

Earlier, PAN’s managing director, Alhaji Ibrahim Boyi, said the management was committed to repositioning the organisation.

According to him, “since the new management came on board, the company has embarked on some turnaround strategies”.  He listed the strategies as rebuilding relationship, improving trade and expanding coverage with Peugeot France and, ultimately, commencing “sale, support and assembly of high-quality Peugeot products.”

Replacing your car brake pad yourself. Step-by-Step info (Part One)

This post will explain extensively a step-by-step guide on how you can replace your car brake pad once it is due for replacement(DIY). If the procedure listed below is carefully followed you should be able to fix your car brake pad yourself.

Before you read further I will advice you to please not to try this without the supervision of an expert if you don't know anything about car brake pad...

Get the exact(correct) brake pads - (Brake pads are available at any auto spare-parts store or your local car dealers). Tell them the make, model and year of your car. They will definitely offer you a choice of different quality pads with a wide range in price.
In general, the more expensive they are, the longer they last (but be very careful not to buy below standard product as original product). Be aware that some very expensive pads with a higher than desirable metal content may be aimed at the 'Rally' market for use with performance Rotors. You will probably not want those because they are likely to cause premature wear of standard Rotors. Preferably try to obtain brake pads that have a visibly similar metal content to the existing pads. Also, some people find that less expensive pads are noisier than "brand name" pads.

Be sure that the vehicle has cooled down - In cases where you just finish driving the car, you may be working with very hot pads, calipers and rotors. Make sure the parts are safe and won't hurt when you touch it before moving on to the next procedure.

Using a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts, loose each of the nuts that hold the wheels to the car about half way then Jack the car up.
(NOTE)- You should locate a safe place to position the car jack under the car. Check user's manual or check for markings that indicate where to place the jack. Put some chocks both behind and front of the wheels that are on the ground to stop the car from rolling backward or forward respectively. Jack the car up gradually until the wheel can be easily removed.
(Take Note it is very important) To place blocks or jack stand more preferably under the frame of your car. NEVER trust the jack alone. Repeat same procedure for the other side of the car so that both sides are securely supported.

Finish loosening and removing the lug nuts then pull the wheel straight outward to remove the wheels.

If the wheel rims are Alloy and are either seized or partially seized on the studs, try hitting the tyre at the base with your foot a few times and hopefully it will be easy to remove. whenever you encounter such, you should clean the studs, stud holes, Rotor mounting surface, and the rear mounting surface of the alloy wheel - with a wire brush and apply anti seize compound before refitting the wheel.

You should now see the rotor-(a large, flat metal disc) and also the caliper (a large clamp-like device wrapped around the top of the rotor).

Read further more to learn the principles in details.

Remove the caliper bolts - There are different approach to removing different calipers as there are  many different ways that the caliper is secured and different Caliper designs to the rotor. The mounting position also depends on the Caliper design and whether it is an all one piece, a two piece, or a more complex design Caliper. All One piece Calipers are generally secured with between 2 to four bolts inside of the stub axle housing. Spray these bolts with WD-40 or PB Penetrating Catalyst to aid in removing them. Using a correct size Socket or Ring spanner, loosen and remove the bolts MAKING SURE THAT THERE ARE NO SHIMS FITTED BETWEEN THE CALIPER MOUNTING BOLTS AND MOUNTING SURFACE. In cases where there are, they must be refitted back as they were or the Caliper will not sit correctly. If any do fall out unexpectedly, you will need to refit the Caliper without the brake pads and using a combination of feeler gauges, to measure the difference(s) between the pad mounting surface to the Caliper at the top and bottom. Then, work out the difference(s) and allocate the shims accordingly.

Alternatively, many Japanese vehicles use a 2 piece sliding Caliper that only requires the removal of 2x forward facing, upper and lower, slider bolts, and NOT the removal of the entire caliper. These bolts are often 12 or 14mm heads.

Additionally, if these caliper are completely removed, it is much more difficult to fit the brake pads into them. Check the caliper pressure; the caliper should now move a slight amount if you shake it. If not the caliper is under pressure and it may fly off when you remove the bolts. Take extra precaution to not be in its path, whether it is loose or not.

Next, have a piece of light tie wire handy, about a foot long, before you proceed. As the caliper will still be connected to the brake line, hang it up carefully by the wire, in the wheel well, so that it doesn't drop and have any weight on the flexible brake hose.

This is where I will be stop for today. SO WATCH OUT FOR THE SECOND PART OF THE POST COMING SOON.

Naija Modern Cars: Traffic Control Signal

Traffic control signals are placed at intersections in other to keep traffic moving and to also avoid a crash.

In Nigeria most people ignored the traffic control but it shouldn't be so. Drivers, pedestrians, and bicycle riders must obey these signals, except when a road safety official is directing traffic.

Stop on the stop line if your car is nearest the signal.
Some signals change only when a car is at the stop line. Occasionally, even when properly positioned near the stop bar, motorcyclists and bicyclists may not be detected.

Red

Come to a complete stop at the marked stop line or before moving into the cross-walk or intersection. At most intersections, after stopping, you may turn right on red if the
way is clear. Some intersections display a "NO TURN ON RED" sign, which you must obey. Left turns on a red light from a one-way street into a one-way street are also allowed.

Anyone convicted of running a red light is required to complete a basic driver improvement course.

Yellow

Stop if you can safely do so. The light will soon be red, so get ready to stop any time soon.

Green

Go - but only if the intersection is clear. Yield to pedestrians and vehicles still in the intersection.

If turning left, wait for a gap in oncoming traffic to complete a turn. If you turn left or right, yield to pedestrians crossing in the cross-walk that you turn into.

Pedestrian signals show words or
pictures similar to the following examples: "WALK" or "Walking Person" lights mean a pedestrian may begin crossing the street.

"DON'T WALK" or "Raised Hand" lights mean a pedestrian may not begin crossing. A pedestrian in the cross-walk when the "DON'T WALK" or "Raised Hand" signal begins flashing should finish crossing the street.

Red Arrow

Just like a red light, come to a complete stop at the marked stop line or before moving into the cross-walk or intersection. After stopping, you may turn right on a red arrow at most intersections if the way is clear. Some intersections display a "NO TURN ON RED" sign, which you must obey. Left turns on a red arrow from a one-way street into a one-way street are also allowed.

Yellow Arrow

Stop if you can. The light will soon be red. The yellow arrow means the same as the yellow light, but applies only to movement in the direction of the arrow.

Flashing Yellow Arrow

A flashing yellow arrow means left turns are allowed. Yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. The oncoming traffic has a green light.

Green Arrow

A green arrow, pointing right or left, means you may make a turn in the direction of the arrow. If the red light is burning at the same time, you must be in the proper lane for such a turn and you must yield the right-of-way to vehicles and pedestrians clearing the intersection.

Flashing Signals

A flashing red light means the same thing as a stop sign. It is used at dangerous intersections.

A flashing yellow light means you may move forward with caution. It is used at, or just before, dangerous intersections, or to alert you to a warning sign such as a school crossing or sharp curve

NAIJA MODERN CARS: PROS AND CONS OF BUYING A USED CAR IN NIGERIA

"It was disclosed by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Nigeria in 2007 that 7million or more registered cars operates
on Nigeria roads." -NigeriaMuse

And just last year estimation of cars Nigeria imported within 9months was published on PUNCH NEWSPAPER

Which is summarized below.

Nigerians imported 96,629 vehicles between January and September of 2012, the Nigerian Automobile Manufacturers Association said in its latest statistics. A breakdown of the figures showed that 22,192 of the vehicles were new and 74,437 vehicles were used ones.

From the above statistics it showed that more than average Nigerian prefer to buy a fairly use car be it a tokunbo or nigeria use(naija used cars).

Below is the Pros and Cons of buying used cars.

There's always a 2 way to buying a car:

1.) It is either you buy through a trained dealer (selling tokunbo and naija use cars).

OR

2.) Buy from a private party/Personal Owner (most sells naija used cars).

Whether you buy from a trained dealer or a private party, both require equal amounts of diligence on your behalf―running vehicle history reports, comparing prices, working out financing, weighing insurance costs, inspecting and test driving targeted vehicle.

Dealer Pros

* Dealers must adhere to stringent
operating/selling procedures. This means you're less likely to be cheated or burdened with a lemon.
* Dealers may provide warranties.
* Dealers offer financing options.
* Dealers can be easily contacted should problems arise.
* Vehicles are inspected by certified trained technicians.
* Dealers offer certified cars.

Private Party Pros

* More room for price negotiating.
* No high-pressure sales pitches.
* Lower prices.

Dealer Cons

* Higher prices.
* Must deal with professional sales teams, reliant upon commissions.

Private Party Cons

* Dealing with an unknown person, not bound to Federal Trade Commission
rules.
* No warranties.
* No trade options.
* You must complete and submit most of the paperwork yourself.
* Limited to seller's time schedule for inspecting vehicle.

I hope this piece help you along making the right decision when considering on buying a used car either toks or naija used vehicles.
